Egypt has been known as the cradle of civilisation for centuries, it is an important cultural holiday destination. Whether you want to take a cruise down the Nile, explore Egypt’s wondrous past or relax on the beaches of the Mediterranean Coast or the Red Sea Riviera, Egypt holidays have something for everyone.

The Red Sea Riviera is extremely popular as a scuba diving holiday destination, and the soft sandy beaches and warm waters certainly add to the appeal. Wellness facilities abound so there is plenty of opportunity for some pampering while on your holidays. For golfers there are some excellent courses including the 18-hole championship golf course in Taba Heights.

Arabic is the main language spoken in Egypt but it is more of a dialect and differs from classic Arabic. English is widely spoken and other languages such as French, German and Italian are also often spoken in the main holiday resorts.

Glorious multi-coloured coral reefs, turtles, giant whale sharks, dolphins, moray eels, wrecks and so much more are all waiting to be explored on Red Sea Diving holidays. Diving centres cater for all levels of experience so if you are new to scuba diving then there is plenty of opportunity to learn during your Egypt holiday. Temperatures from May to October in the Red Sea Riviera are always in the 30s with very little rainfall throughout the year.

The Mediterranean coast of Egypt has a gentler climate than the Red Sea Riviera but boasts some dreamy white sand beaches which are becoming increasingly popular with holidaymakers.  Windsurfing, yachting, fishing and sailing are also popular holiday activities on the Egyptian coast.

Egyptian Culture

Egypt holidays - Pyramids of Giza

Pyramids of Giza

Many people now associate Egypt with Islam but Christianity was an important religion in Egypt’s past and still is for a large minority today.

Egypt is a firm favourite for cultural holidays with so many awe-inspiring ancient wonders to see. The Pyramids and the Great Sphinx of Giza stand just outside Cairo, the only survivors of the ‘seven wonders’ of the ancient world, reminders of a long lost empire. Near Luxor, temples and other antiquities can be found, including the great Valley of the Kings.

There are various museums where you can explore Egypt’s intriguing history and discover the great Pharaohs, gods who were not just kings or queens, but in fact divine rulers. Treasures, relics and artefacts are in abundance in the museums, those coming to Egypt for a historical journey will not be disappointed.

Egypt Food & Drink

As a well-established tourist destination, it is not surprising that international cuisine and even international fast food chains can often be found in the main towns and holiday resorts.

Kushari is considered by some Egyptians to be the national dish, it consists of rice, lentils and macaroni and is topped with tomato sauce, it’s very popular with vegetarians. Often served for breakfast, Ful Medames is another popular Egyptian dish, it is a dish of cooked and mashed fava beans served with olive oil, chopped parsley, onion, garlic and lemon juice. It is renowned for being very filling and is a popular meal to fill up on during Ramadan, before a day of fasting! Pigeon is another local favourite and is stuffed with spicy rice.

Grilled or fried fresh fish served with salad or chips can often be found on the menu, as well as various kebabs, soups and sandwiches.

Tea is the national drink in Egypt and is often served black with sugar, milk can be added on request. Coffee is also very much a part of Egyptian culture.

Beers and wines are available and a wide choice of delicious fruit juices such as banana, mango and coconut, to quench your thirst.

Nightlife in Egypt

Most of the entertainment in Egypt tends to be hotel based offering folk music and belly-dancing shows, but if you are determined to find something a little more lively then Sharm el Sheikh is the place to be with a choice of discos, nightclubs and casinos.
