Most Bulgarian dishes are steamed, oven-baked or in the form of stews, meats are often grilled, with pork being the most common meat. Fish and chicken are also widely eaten with beef being much less so, as cattle are bred mainly for milk production.
Rich salads accompany most meals with a Bulgarian white brine cheese called Sirine being a common ingredient. Moussaka, Gyuvech (oven baked meat and vegetable stew), and Baklava (a rich, sweet pastry dessert) are also traditional dishes.
Yoghurt has been cultivated and consumed in Bulgaria from as far back as 3,000 BC and it is claimed by some that yoghurt originated in Bulgaria, it tastes far superior to that sold in UK supermarkets.
Food and drink are much cheaper in Bulgaria than other European holiday destinations, local Bulgarian Wines and Beers are very popular.
